We can not forget that along with the College or Seminary as it’s sometimes referred to, that the Zum Weinberge Christi, later known as the St John’s Lutheran Church also celebrated in 2025 it’s 180th year since it’s dedication. Most will have heard the stories. It is sited in the town’s centre on land initially allotted to Ferdinand Mueler who donated a couple of acres for it when it was found that the survey allocations had not considered enough land for the church. Built by members Kleinschmidt and Klaer with the woodwork by Mieglich and Hauffe. The red bricks were locally made and it is said that local women carried the fired bricks to the site in baskets or their aprons. It took two years to build at the cost of 130 Pounds. It had wooden roof shingles and originally the interior walls were un plastered. The floor was compacted earth. A candelabra was forged from the iron bands of pioneers’ casks and trunks. That candelabra hangs in the Museum. The Church, now called ‘The Chapel’ is on the State’s Heritage register.

6 Main Street - Kleinschmidt House and behind it a bakehouse/cottage with oven

Friedrich Wilhelm Kleinschmidt had vast land holdings from current Main Street east to Ridge Road; Cow Stall, dairy sheds and the Coach-house. Other land for grazing on Lenswood Road. Behind his much renovated stone and brick home at 6 Main Street is a Bakehouse/cottage of stone with brick chimney at the rear. It is now mostly covered in ivy.
